Dulles Middle School
Students Wins School-Level National Geographic Bee
Dulles
Middle School student Ryan Lester (shown accepting award from Coach and P.E.
teacher Harry Hall) was named winner of the Dulles school-level 2004 National
Geographic Bee. The contest is designed to encourage teachers to include
geography in their classrooms, spark student interest in the subject, and
increase public awareness about geography. Each year, thousands of schools in
the U.S. participate in the National Geographic Bee using materials prepared by
the National Geographic Society. Students who win the school level contest take
a written test, and the top 100 scorers in each state and territory compete at
the state level, and hopefully advance to the national competition in
Washington, D.C. The number of contestants is then narrowed to two finalists,
who compete for a $25,000 college scholarship. The second- and third-place
winners receive $15,000 and $10,000 scholarships, respectively. Ryan competed
against nearly 60 other Dulles students, with Jeffrey Chen coming in second
place. As winner, Ryan received a medal and a $25 gift certificate.

FBISD Employees Support
Heart Disease Awareness
Many employees throughout Fort Bend ISD
observed the first National Wear Red Day, February 6, by dressing in their
favorite red attire. National Wear Red Day (which will be observed the first
Friday during American Heart Month), was created to help raise awareness of the
fact that heart disease is the #1 killer of women in the United States. It
supports the "red dress" as the symbol for women and heart disease awareness. By
showing off their favorite red dress, shirt or tie, FBISD employees joined in
the nationwide campaign to give women a personal and urgent wake-up call about
their risk of heart disease. |
