Help To Make A
Difference In Fort Bend County By Becoming A Literacy Council Tutor
Imagine
going out every morning into a world where strangers speak a language that you
cannot understand and shake their heads when you ask for help, where signs look
more like squirming snakes than words, where social behavior and daily customs
are unfamiliar and puzzling. Imagine growing up here, but not having a high
school diploma, not being able to read your mail, not being able to share books
or help with your children’s homework.
That’s what life in the United States and in Fort Bend County is like for
thousands of residents whose native language is not English, who are not able to
speak, read or understand English well enough to ask for help, read signs and
labels, or get through a day without embarrassment and fear. That’s what life
is like for thousands of citizens whose native language is English, but never
learned to read in school.
Imagine if you were in their shoes. Wouldn’t you appreciate having someone to
help you learn the language and practice conversation, to answer questions about
customs and behavior, to teach you to be able to read to your children, to be
your friend?
That’s what the Literacy Council of Fort Bend County (LCFBC) provides through
its English as a Second Language and Basic Literacy programs. Volunteers are
trained as tutors and matched with adults needing help. Learners benefit from
the small group or individualized attention and volunteers enjoy the rewards of
helping someone increase their knowledge and become more independent.
As
Fort Bend County continues to grow, the need for LCFBC’s service also grows and
the organization averages a waiting list of over 50 individuals who are eagerly
waiting for tutors. If you are willing to help by becoming a volunteer tutor,
we will train you. Knowledge of a foreign language or formal teaching
experience are not required. All you need is the desire to make a difference in
someone’s life.

Brightwater
Garden Club
Taste of
Brightwater II
After the resounding success of their first cookbook, the Brightwater Garden
Club has compiled a second cookbook --
Taste of Brightwater
II.
The book is filled with more than 600 mouthwatering recipes supplied by local
residents and their family and friends, plus contributions from Missouri City
elected officials, including Mayor Allen Owen. The recipes fringe from down
home favorites to international cuisine. Proceeds from the cookbooks will be
used to support the community service programs adopted by the club, including
the Fort Bend Women's Shelter and upkeep of the Lexington Creek Elementary
Butterfly Garden. The cookbooks cost $15 and may be purchased by calling
281-403-9672, 281-403-9269, or 281-261-5517.
Books will also be
available at the Brightwater Garden Club monthly meetings.

with literacy and learning difficulties for all ages. Located at 2360 Texas
Parkway, the project serves Fort Bend County with a revolutionary new approach
to improving literacy and learning.
If you are looking for workable alternatives to labeling, flunking, punishing or
medicating your child, call us at
