Land Swap In Missouri City Is Formalized…parkland
development planned
Missouri City is ready to move forward with its plans to develop land acquired
from a land swap where the City ended up with more for less. The land swap,
approved by voters in the fall as part of a bond election as required by law,
will increase the size of Hunters Glen Park from 12.5 acres to almost 16 acres.
The
City Council recently authorized Mayor Allen Owen to execute a special warranty
deed granting .3572 acres of parkland from Hunter’s Glen Park to Grocer’s Supply
Corp., owners of the land where Fiesta Food Mart is located. In turn, on behalf
of Missouri City Mayor Owen will accept, also by special warranty deed, almost
four acres of land next to Hunter’s Glen Park from the Grocer’s Supply Company.
This
swap will allow the City’s Parks and Recreation Department to develop the near
four acres of property for parkland use on the frontage alongside Independence
Boulevard. Parks and Recreation Director, Doug Carter, told Council members that
the property owned by Grocer’s Supply Corp. was originally intended to be
marketed as retail space. “When they no longer saw a need to do this, they
wanted to instead expand their retail area in front of Fiesta Mart and needed a
little bit of the parkland that the city owned,” said Carter.
Hunter’s Glen Park, formerly known as Park 17, is a 12.6 acre park fronting
Grand Park Drive behind the Fiesta Food Mart on Independence Boulevard. The park
is currently being developed with football fields, a jogging/walking trail,
picnic facilities, basketball court, and a parking lot. Future plans include
providing restroom facilities, pavilions and playground equipment.
Now
that city voters have authorized the swap and the City Council has cleared the
way for the legal formality, Missouri City stands to reap of the benefits by
being able to utilize more land adjacent to Hunter’s Glen Park for the
recreational use of its residents.
